clause

A group of words that has a subject and a verb and is used as part of a sentence.


complete predicate

Contains the simple predicate (verb) and any words that tell about the verb.


complete subject

Contains the simple subject and any words that describe the simple subject.


complex sentence

Made up  of one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.


D

dependent clause

Has a subject and a verb but does not tell a complete thought.

fragment

An incomplete sentence.

independent clause

A clause that can stand alone as a sentence.


P

predicate

The part of the sentence that tells what the subject does or is.


S

sentence

A group of words that form a complete thought.


simple predicate

The verb or action word.


simple sentence

Tells one complete thought and has one complete subject and one complete predicate.


simple subject

The main word in the complete subject.


subject

The part of the sentence that tells who or what does or is doing something.
