9.3 Assessment Item Development
Assessment Item Types
You are only one step away from writing your actual assessment item. The last thing you need to do is identify the assessment item type that will best elicit the evidence you are looking for from students. There are several different assessment item types, which we categorize as Selected-response (SR), Constructed-response (CR), Technology-enhanced (TE), and Performance Task (PT). You learned about these different assessment item types in Module 3: All About Next Generation Assessments. If you would like to review the definition of these assessment item types, please go back to the Assessment Item and Task Types section from 3.2 Introduction to Next Generation Assessments.
Understanding the different item types you can create, select the assessment item type based on the standard(s) that will be assessed in your assessment item and:
- the assessment target for your assessment item,
- the student evidence required for the assessment target you are assessing,
- the key features that must be included in your assessment item, and
- how your assessment item will allow for the production of the evidence you are seeking.
Digital Portfolio
Once you have selected your assessment item type, identify the type on the Item Specification Table in your Digital Portfolio. Then watch the video below that corresponds to the assessment item type you selected. The information in these videos will help you with writing each assessment item type. If you selected to do a technology enhanced assessment item, you should watch both the selected-response and constructed-response videos.
To watch a video, simply click the item type you would like to learn more about and the video will appear in the area below.
