Objective: After lesson students will be able have a plan for changing something in the community, with a strong and reasonable argument. Students will also understand the principles behind creating a law or making a change in a community.
Standards:
- 6.1.4 Address a public issue by suggesting alternative solutions or courses of action, evaluating the consequences of each, and proposing an action to address the issue or resolve the problem.
- 6.1.5 Make a persuasive, reasoned argument on a public issue and support using evidence(e.g., historical and contemporary examples), constitutional principles, and fundamental values of American constitutional democracy; explain the stance or position.
Procedures:
Prior to this lesson, students will have learning about constitutional principles and fundamental values of American constitutional democracy.
Split students into groups of 4
After browsing the city website and thinking about their community students should decide as a group what they would like to change or add in the community.
Students are to submit these ideas onto Edmodo. Other groups are responsible for typing a response to each group so that a discussion is started about each proposal.
Following the online discussion, groups will create a Prezi or Google Doc to formally propose the change with a course of action, alternative solutions, consequences, and a way to resolve the problem using evidence from online resources about the community or newspapers. Students will be required to look up zoning issues and local laws to be sure the idea is possible.

Following the proposals students will go back into Edmodo and take a pole for the proposal should be passed.
